Monte Cook and Monte Cook Are Teaching Classes at Dungeon Master Academy

Since 2018, a specialized event organizer has been hosting deeply engaging experiences where experienced game masters manage D&D games in ancient fortresses in Britain and at an American castle venue. The full-service getaways are highly favored among career game masters who infrequently find the opportunity to actually play themselves, and they often look for guidance from experts on topics ranging from spontaneous storytelling and crafting riddles to handling difficult situations at the table.

In response, the coordinators began developing a organized method to address these questions, which led to the founding of the Dungeon Master Academy. The debut workshop is set for January 2-3, 2026 at an Atlanta campus.

“There are countless online tutorials on almost every theme and learn quite a lot, but the concept was that nothing compares to face-to-face interaction in the company of other dungeon masters, where there’s live engagement with expert teachers and other game masters often in comparable situations and seek to level up their game,” explained the dean of Dungeon Master University.

Course Offerings and Ticket Packages

Game masters can opt for packages ranging from nearly a thousand dollars to $2.5K, based on the degree of interaction they desire with the experts. The base tier includes one of four courses:

  • Foundational Skills: Covers the fundamentals of leading a game.
  • Story Arc Development: Is dedicated to crafting long-running games.
  • Setting Creation: Emphasizes the crafting of environments.
  • Career Building: Aimed at dungeon masters who seek to understand more about the gaming industry.

Each course includes multiple sessions of training divided across 48 hours.

“The courses are designed so that you walk away with tangible results, probably greater confidence, and numerous applicable methods,” Carl explained. “They’re not just lectures and they’re not just static videos. These classes that you can attend, gain knowledge from, and then go right back home the next week and apply in your home campaign.”

Professional Teachers

Most classes are led by a pair of experts. Worldbuilding is guided by an industry veteran and Keith Baker, together instructing the art of worldbuilding.

Industry advancement presents four different teachers, such as a puzzle design specialist, a podcast co-host, and a pioneering DM. The additional faculty is designed to provide specialized information to participants with definite objectives.

“Various attendees want to launch their own D&D actual play and share their stories with the world, some of them aim to release and develop fresh ideas,” Carl stated. “Several only seek to ask, How do I get to be a DM at something like D&D in a Castle? Which abilities that I need? Is it for everyone?”

Advanced Options

A $1,500 premium package provides access to a opening gathering, a welcome gift pack, and a brief one-on-one appointment with one of the faculty. This represents the inaugural DMU session, though the organizers has previously run comparable workshops during breaks between adventures at their premium gatherings.

“One could practically host an entire weekend just on one-on-one meetings for expert DMs,” Carl observed. “I'm not certain if that’s the most effective utilization of each attendee's hours – I believe the structured learning and the practical exercises is too valuable – but I believe it’s going to be one of the most popular parts of the program.”

The $2,500 premium option provides an hour of one-on-one time and the opportunity to lead a session for a small group plus an instructor, who will then offer feedback and coaching.

“The goal is for the instructor to assess whatever the DM is interested in: I have difficulty with spontaneous decisions or I feel stuck in this kind of combat situation. Could I demonstrate a scenario for you and receive input on what my strengths and weaknesses are?” Carl explained. “Perhaps they want to receive input and information on a specific world that they’ve been developing.”

Coming Developments

Responses from the inaugural session will help determine subsequent DMU events. Carl suggested that potential adjustments could include expanding one-on-one sessions, lengthening the event to 72 hours, or experimenting with alternative workshop formats.

“I hope that we host such events regularly,” Carl stated. “I would love to see multiple Dungeon Master Universities in a calendar year, in various locations, and in different countries. The feedback has been extremely positive. We're extremely satisfied with the results so far and I believe it would be amazing to be able to organize these in collaboration with major events.”
